  • Peat is used as a substrate in horticulture. It is extracted from raised bog, which degrades the natural moss areas. Artificially produced peat moss could replace peat as a substrate in horticulture. Therefore, a process for biomass production on a larger scale needs to be developed. The peat moss will be cultivated in different bioreactor types and growth conditions will be optimised.

The focus of this work is the investigation of nitrogen sources on peat moss growth. Media typically used for peat moss cultivation contain both nitrate and ammonium as nitrogen sources. Therefore, it should be investigated  which nitrogen source is suitable for peat moss growth. In particular, the optimum concentration and feeding strategy should be determined. The cultivation is carried out in different bioreactor types, e.g. shaking flasks or trickle bed reactors. The basics of cultivation are learned, therefore previous knowledge in the field of cultivation is not mandatory.

We are looking for motivated students who are studying bioengineering, biotechnology or closely related subjects and are interested in cultivation. The interest in biological questions as well as diligence and fun in research is important.
